HBO has released an official "Watchmen" featurette, which is offering a deeper look at the forthcoming gritty superhero series inspired by the groundbreaking 1986 graphic novel of the same name by legendary comic book writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons.

"Our 'Watchmen' honors the graphic novel without making it necessary to have read it in order to understand this new story," says series creator Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) in the above video.

Set in an alternate world and timeline where masked superheroes have existed but are now regarded as outlaws, the series finds America in the middle of a political, social and economic crisis, which has caused the national police force to be more aggressive and secretive.

"A new terrorist organization has emerged called, the Seventh Cavalry," says Lindelof.

While wearing masks that resemble the inkblot mask of famed vigilante Rorschach, the Seventh Cavalry have conducted a number of coordinated attacks on police officers.

"And because of that incident, the police wear masks to protect themselves and their families," states Oscar-and-Emmy-winning actress Regina King, who stars in the series as a masked crime-fighter named Angela Abar, who is also a wife and mother of young children.

"[The series] really explores the complexity of who you are when you wear a mask, and who you are when you're not wearing a mask," says executive producer/director Nicole Kassell (The Leftovers, Westworld, The Americans), who helmed the pilot episode of "Watchmen."

The cast also includes Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Hong Chau, Louis Gossett Jr. and Jean Smart with Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons as Adrian Veidt (aka Ozymandias).

"Watchmen: Season 1" premieres October 20th, only on HBO.
