The backstory behind director M. Night Shyamalan's next sci-fi adventure "After Earth" is so rich and dense with details that Columbia Pictures released a viral video dealing with the film's history. Using a Facebook timeline, the clip examines the reason why Earth became abandoned and sets up the story behind the "most influential family in human history" the Raiges. Who are the Raiges? Well, General Cypher Raige is played by Will Smith, while his son Kitai Raige is played by (you guessed it) Jaden Smith -- neither of the two appear in this clip unfortunately.
But to give you an idea about the film -- it's basically a survival tale set 1000 years into the future, in which Jaden is forced to save his gravely injured father after their spacecraft crash lands on a now desolated and hostile Earth. Written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and former videogame writer turned screenwriter Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli ), "After Earth" will be crashing into theaters next summer, on June 7th, 2013.
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
