During the height of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and during a period when racial tensions were soaring, there was a small recording studio in Detroit, Michigan where on a weekly basis you would see Diana Ross in a recording booth, Stevie Wonder behind the piano, Smokey Robinson writing a lyric to a hit record, and Marvin Gaye singing a number-one song.

Motown wasn't just one of the most successful record companies in music history. It was the birthplace for a whole generation of African-American recording artists who not only transcended race, but made soul music mainstream, inspiring listeners in all corners of the world.

In the new Showtime documentary "Hitsville: The Making of Motown," filmmakers Benjamin Turner and Gabe Turner (I Am Bolt, The Class of '92) charts the formation of one of the greatest record labels in history, Motown Records.

Featuring exclusive interviews with legendary Motown founder Berry Gordy, with rare behind-the-scenes footage from Gordy's personal archives, the documentary offers an in-depth look at how Gordy created a hit factory in the middle of his neighborhood of Detroit, which helped launch the careers of such artists and singing groups as the Supremes, the Miracles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Four Tops, and the Jackson 5, and the list goes on.

"Hitsville: The Making of Motown" is scheduled to premiere on Showtime starting on Saturday, August 24. Watch the trailer, above.
