EPIX has released the official trailer for the new historical crime series "Godfather of Harlem," which stars Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker as legendary Harlem mob boss Bumpy Johnson.

Set in the 1960s, the series tells the untold story of how Bumpy Johnson formed an alliance with Black Muslim Leader Malcolm X as they worked together to fight for control of Harlem against the Italian mob.

Nigel Thatch, the actor who portrayed Malcolm X in Ava DuVernay's acclaimed 2014 film "Selma," is once again playing the famed Muslim civil rights leader in the series, while Vincent D'Onofrio (Jurassic World, Daredevil) co-stars as notorious Italian mobster Vincent "Chin" Gigante.

The ten-episode drama starts off when Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) is released from prison after serving a ten-year sentence. Shocked to see that the streets of Harlem have been rocked by a surge of heroin use, Bumpy takes steps to regain control of the city. He soon discovers Harlem now falls under the jurisdiction of the Genovese crime family. Bumpy then decides to aligned himself with Malcolm X who shares his goal of cleaning up Harlem.

"I got guns," Bumpy says to Malcolm X in the above trailer. To which Malcolm quickly replies "I got soldiers."

Executive produced by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, the producers of the Netflix crime series "Narcos," "Godfather of Harlem" also co-stars Ilfenesh Hadera (Netflix's She's Gotta Have It), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad).

Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave" screenwriter John Ridley directs the first episode, which is set to premiere September 29th on the EPIX network. Watch the trailer, above.
