In the sci-fi-tinged action thriller "Gemini Man," Will Smith stars as a 50-year-old world-class assassin who is shocked to learn that he's being actively pursued by a 23-year-old genetically identical clone version of himself (also played here by Smith).
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), the film is set in the near future, where DNA can be used in cloning copies of actual humans.
The technical undertaking of turning 50-year-old Will Smith into a younger version of himself gets explained in this behind-the-scene featurette, which dispels the notion that this was some kind of "de-aging" process.
"Creating a digital human is one of the hardest things you can do in visual effects," states VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer in the above clip. "This is not de-aging, this not face replacement. What you see for 'Junior' [the 23-year-old clone character] is a completely digital creation, 100 percent driven by Will Smith's performance capture."
Produced by action maestro Jerry Bruckheimer (Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, Armageddon, etc.), "Gemini Man" also stars Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Benedict Wong. The film is hitting theaters October 11th.
