Oscar-and-Emmy-winning actress Regina King plays a secret crime-fighter who doles out some vigilante-style justice in the new official Comic-Con trailer for "Watchmen," the new gritty superhero series inspired by the groundbreaking 1986 graphic novel of the same name by comic book writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons.

Executive producer Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) is spearheading this HBO drama, which is said to be a "modern-day reimagining" of Moore's much-revered comic book series. And from the looks of things, Lindelof has taken essential elements and characters from the source material, yet is taking some creative liberties to tell a new story that is part sequel, part remake, and part original.

"Watchmen" is set in an alternate world and timeline where all masked superheroes are now treated as outlaws. And where Adrian Veidt is presumed dead (though, he's not) and Doctor Manhattan is believed to be hiding out on Mars.

But due to a recent wave of violence and cop assassinations, police officers are forced to wear masks to conceal their identity for their safety. But as a result of this action, ordinary citizens are unable to determine who is a masked cop or who is a dangerous vigilante -- though, perhaps, there's no difference.

In addition to King, the HBO series stars Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Tom Mison, Hong Chau, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jean Smart with Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons playing Adrian Veidt (aka Ozymandias).

"Watchmen: Season 1" is due to premiere in October, only on HBO.
