A 14-year-old African-American prodigy struggles to find his place in his South Florida neighborhood as he strives for a better future.

Check out the new official trailer for "David Makes Man," a semi-biographical coming-of-age series created and written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the Oscar-winning writer of the Oscar-winning drama "Moonlight."

From executive producers Michael B. Jordan and Oprah Winfrey, the ten-episode series stars newcomer Akili McDowell (The Astronaut Wives Club) in the title role of David, a brilliant 14-year-old kid living in the projects, who is still reeling from the tragic death of his best friend. While facing financial challenges, David continues his efforts to ensure a sustainable future for himself and his hard-working mother.

Co-starring Phylicia Rashad (Creed I & II, The Cosby Show) and Alana Arenas (Electric Dreams, Chicago P.D.), the series is produced by showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence (Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.).

"David Makes Man: Season 1" is set to premiere August 14th on Oprah's cable network, OWN.

synopsis:
From Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney ("Moonlight"), DAVID MAKES MAN centers on a 14-year-old prodigy from the projects who is haunted by the death of his closest friend and relied on by his hardworking mother to find a way out of poverty. He must choose between the streets that raised him or the higher education that may offer him a way out. Set in South Florida, the series is inspired by events in McCraney's own life and explores childhood trauma and the power of imagination to survive.
