As "Dark Phoenix" inches closer to its release date, Fox has released a new batch of commercials, featuring a bit of new footage from what is now being called "The X-Men's Final Battle."

Because of the recent Disney-FOX merger, "Dark Phoenix" is going to be one of the last Marvel-FOX films (the other being the long-delayed "New Mutants" movie, due out 2020), and will be the last installment in FOX's X-Men cinematic franchise.

Inspired by one of the most iconic and beloved X-Men comic book story-lines, "The Dark Phoenix Saga," the film sees "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner reprising her role as Jean Grey, a young telepathic/telekinetic mutant who, after surviving a near-death experience during a space mission, returns home, only to be reborn as a completely new, super-powered being.

When a mysterious alien shape-shifter (played by Jessica Chastain) comes into her life and manipulates her emotions, Jean eventually succumbs to her dark side. She transforms into an unstoppable super-villain, known as the Dark Phoenix. She becomes the most powerful villain the X-Men have ever faced.

Longtime "X-Men" producer/screenwriter Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut with "Dark Phoenix," which also sees the returns of Jennifer Lawrence (as Mystique), James McAvoy (as Professor X), Michael Fassbender (as Magneto), Tye Sheridan (as Cyclops), Nicholas Hoult (as Beast), Evan Peters (as Quicksilver), Alexandra Shipp (as Storm), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (as Nightcrawler).

"Dark Phoenix" is opening everywhere June 7th.

synopsis:
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
