Back in 1991, long before "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman," Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone paid a particularly spirited and memorable tribute to one of the greatest psychedelic rock bands in history: The Doors. Which has now been digitally restored in 4K for an upcoming blu-ray release.

Starring a young Val Kilmer as the 1960s rock legend Jim Morrison and Meg Ryan as the singer's longtime girlfriend, Pamela Courson, the '90s biographical musical charted the extraordinary rise of The Doors, as well as the tragic fall of its iconic frontman.

Kilmer delivered an awards-worthy performance, which should've gotten him an Oscar nomination, if not the Golden statuette, as he was universally praised by critics for his portrayal of the drunken, stoned, and misunderstood rock poet.

Kilmer was also widely lauded for his singing voice as he sang in several closeup scenes in the film, which mainly used recordings of Morrison's voice in wide shots. And despite a public dispute with Stone over factual inaccuracies, the surviving band members of The Doors had good things to say about Kilmer's performance, especially his vocals that eerily sounded just like Morrison.

Premiering this month at the Cannes Film Festival, the new 4K restored version of Stone's final cut will released later this summer, both in the UK and the US (via StudioCanal and Lionsgate), on 4K Blu-ray. Watch the new official trailer, above.
