Watchmen: Season 1 — Official Teaser

Well, with "Game of Thrones" coming to a close, HBO is hoping their subscribers will want to stick around to watch a new dark superhero series about the "end of the world." And they might be right because the first official footage does look pretty intriguing.

Check out the official teaser trailer for "Watchmen," a new HBO original series inspired by the seminal 1986 graphic novel of the same name by comic book writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons.

Hailing from television producer Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers), the upcoming HBO drama is described as a "modern-day reimagining" of the groundbreaking comic book series, which had already been adapted into a 2009 feature film from "Batman v Superman" director Zack Snyder.

This new version, a ten-episode mystery-thriller series, will take some creative liberties to tell an original story and will feature new superhero and vigilante characters. Although, it's been rumored that Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons is playing the older version of Adrian Veidt (aka Ozymandias), a retired genius superhero who conspired to end the world in the original books and movie.

From the looks of the teaser, it seems Rorschach, a violent masked vigilante who dies in the books and movie, has inspired a new extreme movement, spawning a new crop of angry masked vigilantes, which further suggests the HBO series is set after the events of the comics, possibly taking place in an alternate present-day.

In addition to Irons, the cast also includes recent Oscar-winner Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Tom Mison, Hong Chau, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jean Smart.

Featuring an original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, "Watchmen: Season 1" will premiere sometime in the fall, only on HBO.
