It's the 40th anniversary of "Apocalypse Now," Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 war masterpiece.

And to celebrate the commemoration, the Oscar-winning film is heading back into theaters this summer with an all-new 4K restoration of the "Final Cut."

Starring Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper, Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando, and a young baby-faced Laurence Fishburne, "Apocalypse Now" is a dark psychological portrait of the horrific Vietnam War.

Loosely inspired by Joseph Conrad's 1899 dark expedition novel "Heart of Darkness," the film sees Sheen as Captain Willard, a psychologically scarred Army officer who is sent on a secret mission to assassinate a rogue special forces commander, Colonel Kurtz (Brando), who's been hiding in the jungles of Cambodia.

"Apocalypse Now" was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won two Oscars for Best Sound and Best Cinematography (cinematographer Vittorio Storaro).

Considered as a timeless classic and one of the best war films in cinematic history, the film's yearlong production was plagued by numerous issues and setbacks that nearly sent Coppola and Sheen to their graves because of stress and exhaustion. Coppola ended up losing 100 pounds and was admitted to a hospital for severe dehydration while Sheen famously suffered a heart attack during the shoot.

The 183-minute "Apocalypse Now: Final Cut" is about a half-hour longer than the 1979 original 153-minute cut, but significantly shorter than the 202-minute extended version "Apocalypse Now Redux" which was released back in 2001.

Digitally restored from the original negative, "Apocalypse Now: Final Cut" just premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival.

"Final Cut" is now scheduled to be released nationwide in theaters on August 15th, before arriving on Digital 4K Ultra HD and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack on August 27th. Watch the new re-release trailer, above.
