The official U.S. trailer has been released for "Ladies In Black," an Australian female-centric period dramedy based on author Madeleine St John's 1993 best-seller "The Women in Black," which itself was adapted into an acclaimed 2015 Australian musical.

Directed by two-time Academy Award nominated, 78-year-old director Bruce Beresford, of "Tender Mercies," "Mao's Last Dancer," and "Driving Miss Daisy," the drama takes place in the summer of 1959 during the rise of the women's liberation movement, centering around a young schoolgirl who has just joined the all-female, all-dressed-in-black, sales staff at a high-end women's clothing store in Sydney, Australia.

The boutique store is operated by a no-nonsense manager, a Hungarian refugee named Magda, played here by Emmy-winner Julia Ormond.

Magda forges meaningful relationships with her staff, specifically a kinship with 16-year-old Lisa (played by Angourie Rice, from "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "The Nice Guys"). Magda also sets up a potential romance between a local Hungarian businessman (Ryan Corr, from "Hacksaw Ridge") with winsome saleswoman Fay (Rachael Taylor, from "Marvel's Jessica Jones").

The cast also includes Alison McGirr, Susie Porter, and Noni Hazlehurst with Shane Jacobson (The Dressmaker) and Vincent Perez (The Crow: City of Angels).

"Ladies in Black," which already opened in Australia back in October, is getting a digital release in the U.S. starting May 21st.

synopsis:
The classic Australian story about love, hope and the perfect dress, now adapted for the big screen.

From Academy Award-nominated director Bruce Beresford comes the comedy drama LADIES IN BLACK, based on Madeleine St John's best-selling novel, THE WOMEN IN BLACK.

Set in the summer of 1959, when the impact of European migration and the rise of women's liberation is about to change Australia forever, a shy schoolgirl, Lisa, takes a summer job at the prestigious Sydney department store, Goode's. There she meets the "ladies in black," who will change her life forever.

Beguiled and influenced by Magda, the vivacious manager of the high-fashion floor, and befriended by fellow sales ladies Patty and Fay, Lisa is awakened to a world of possibilities. As Lisa grows from a bookish schoolgirl to a glamorous and positive young woman, she herself becomes a catalyst for a cultural change in everyone's lives.
