War is madness. That's the fundamental notion behind Hulu's new mini-series "Catch-22," for which a brand-new official trailer has been released.

George Clooney executive produces, co-stars, and directs the first two episodes of this six-episode Hulu drama, which is a new adaptation of author Joseph Heller's classic 1961 satirical WWII novel of the same name, which was previously turned into a cult 1970 film from director Mike Nichols and starring Alan Arkin.

In this version, Christopher Abbott (from "First Man" and HBO's "Girls") stars as John Yossarian, a frustrated, emotionally exhausted American Air Force bombardier who finds himself trapped in bureaucratic purgatory when he realizes that the only way to get out of flying suicidal combat missions is by being declared legally insane -- although by just merely raising that issue he would be considered sane enough to fly. Hence: it's a "Catch-22."

Playing Yossarian's Air Force commanding officers are Clooney as war-obsessed unit commander Scheisskopf; Kyle Chandler (Game Night, First Man) as Col. Cathcart, who keeps raising the number of Yossarian's bombing missions, and Hugh Laurie (House, The Night Manager) as Major De Coverley.

The cast also includes Jon Rudnitsky (Saturday Night Live), Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale), Giancarlo Giannini (Casino Royale), and Tessa Ferrer (Grey's Anatomy).

Grant Heslov (Clooney's longtime producing-writing partner and best friend) co-stars as Doc Daneeka. Heslov also serves as an executive producer and directs episodes 5 and 6, while acclaimed cinematographer/TV director Ellen Kuras is helming episodes 3 and 4.

"Catch-22" is due to premiere May 17th, only on Hulu.

synopsis:
Based on Joseph Heller's seminal novel of the same name, CATCH-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him.

But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.
