On the night of April 19, 1989 in Manhattan's Central Park, a 28-year-old female jogger was found brutally beaten and sexually assaulted. She would later slip into a coma for 12 days.

On that same night, five male youths from Harlem -- four African-American and one Latino -- were picked up by the police during a random sweep. Despite any solid evidence, the five teens would later be interrogated by detectives and subjected to hours of intimidation tactics. Eventually, they were all coerced into making false confessions. As a result, the teenagers were found guilty and sent to jail for a crime they didn't commit.

It wasn't until 2002 that a convicted murderer and serial rapist, who was already serving time in prison, finally confessed to the jogger's rape. A DNA test only confirmed his confession.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay (13th, Selma) has turned this shocking true story of "The Central Park Five" case into a new four-part Netflix mini-series, featuring a top-notch cast that includes Jovan Adepo, Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Niecy Nash, Blair Underwood, Storm Reid, and Joshua Jackson, among others.

Produced, directed and co-written by DuVernay, "When They See Us" premieres May 31st, only on Netflix. Watch the official trailer, above, which was released today, exactly 30 years after the awful crime took place.
