From the world-renowned director of "Hero," "House of Flying Daggers," and "Raise the Red Lantern," comes a new wuxia epic that has been inspired by ancient Chinese ink-brush and watercolor paintings and black-and-white yin-and-yang symbolism.

Check out the official U.S. trailer for "Shadow," the latest period action-drama from visionary Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who has returned to form after a slight slump that included 2016's critically panned Matt Damon-versus-monsters epic "The Great Wall."

Starring Deng Chao, Sun Li, Zheng Kai, Wang Qianyuan, Wang Jingchun, Hu Jun, Guan Xiaotong, and Leo Wu, "Shadow" is loosely based on the fabled saga of the "Three Kingdoms," focusing on a brewing battle between two warring empires -- one led by a "shadow," the king's body double, and the other led by an army of skilled warriors who are known for wielding steel umbrella-like weapons.

"Shadow," which has earned four Golden Horse Awards (widely regarded as the Oscars for Chinese films), including the Best Director Award for Zhang, is coming to select U.S. theaters on May 3rd.

synopsis:
With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated.

In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a "shadow," a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.
