Trial by Fire — Official Trailer

Laura Dern is on a mission to save an innocent death-row inmate in the official trailer for the based-on-a-true-story drama "Trial by Fire."

The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker/TV producer Edward Zwick (Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Last Samurai, etc.), also stars English actor Jack O'Connell (Unbroken, Godless, Starred Up) as Cameron Todd Willingham, a Texas heavy-metal outcast who in 1992 was unjustly convicted of murdering his three young daughters by arson.

While Cameron (O'Connell) sits on death row and awaits execution, he starts corresponding with a French teacher and mother of two from Houston named Elizabeth Gilbert (Dern). Little does he know, Elizabeth will become his greatest ally, an outspoken advocate who fights to have his case overturned.

Written by Oscar-winning scribe Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious) and based on the New Yorker Article by David Grann, "Trial by Fire" is scheduled to open in select theaters on May 17th. Watch the trailer, above.

TRIAL BY FIRE is the true-life Texas story of the unlikely bond between an imprisoned death row inmate (Jack O'Connell) and a mother of two from Houston (Laura Dern) who, though facing staggering odds, fights mightily for his freedom.

Cameron Todd Willingham, a poor, uneducated heavy metal devotee with a violent streak and a criminal record, is convicted of arson-related triple homicide in 1992. During his 12 years on death row, Elizabeth Gilbert, an improbable ally, uncovers questionable methods and illogical conclusions in his case, and battles with the state to expose suppressed evidence that could save him.
