Filmmaker James Gunn has released a new extended trailer for his latest effort "Brightburn," which is putting a dark and twisted spin on the superhero mythos.

While borrowing elements from Superman's origins, yet flipping it directly on its head, "Brightburn" has been touted as a superhero horror, telling the disturbing story of a young alien boy (played by Jackson A. Dunn) with super human abilities who, much like Superman, crash-landed on Earth and was raised by Midwestern human adoptive parents (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman).

The thing is, this special boy has a dark side ... a very dark side. Which begs the question, what if Superman didn't grow up to be the world's greatest hero, but instead became the world's most dangerous (and most murderous) villain.

Produced by the "Guardians of the Galaxy" helmer, "Brightburn" is directed by horror filmmaker David Yarovesky, known for directing the 2014 cult Memento-like zombie thriller "The Hive."

The film is written by James Gunn's screenwriting brothers Mark Gunn & Brian Gunn, who both previously wrote the screenplay for the Dwayne Johnson movie "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."

"Brightburn" is hitting theaters May 24th.

synopsis:
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?

With BRIGHTBURN, producer James Gunn, the visionary filmmaker of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Slither," presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
