Oscar winner Forest Whitaker is legendary Harlem mob boss Bumpy Johnson in the first official teaser trailer for the new EPIX original series "Godfather Of Harlem."

Created and written by "Narcos" co-creator Chris Brancato and "Narcos" producer Paul Eckstein, the 1960s-set crime series dramatizes the events that led to gangster Bumpy Johnson's real-life alliance with famed civil rights leader Malcolm X (portrayed here by "Selma" actor Nigel Thatch).

The ten-episode drama will start off with Bumpy (Whitaker) getting released from prison after ten years, only to return to a chaotic, disorganized Harlem now ruled by the Italian mob. Bumpy eventually aligns himself with Malcolm X in a brutal effort to regain control of the streets of Harlem.

"Daredevil" actor Vincent D'Onofrio is playing famed Italian mobster Vincent "Chin" Gigante. The cast also includes Ilfenesh Hadera (Netflix's She's Gotta Have It), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Lucy Fry (Bright), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (It Comes at Night), and newcomer Antoinette Crowe-Legacy.

Also, executive produced by Whitaker, "Godfather Of Harlem" will be released later in the year sometime in the fall, exclusively premiering on the EPIX network.

synopsis:
GODFATHER OF HARLEM is inspired by the story of infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from ten years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. With the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Bumpy must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control. During the brutal battle, he forms an alliance with radical preacher Malcolm X – catching Malcolm’s political rise in the crosshairs of social upheaval and a mob war that threatens to tear the city apart.

GODFATHER OF HARLEM is a collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement during one of the most tumultuous times in American history.
