Sally Wainwright, creator of the BAFTA-winning British cop series "Happy Valley," teams up with HBO and BBC for another female-led television drama. This time, the series is based on the renowned diaries of 19th-century English lesbian landowner Anne Lister.

"Gentleman Jack," an eight-episode period drama set to air next month on HBO, stars BAFTA-winning British TV actress Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster, Coronation Street) in the title role.

"Game of Thrones" alum Gemma Whelan also co-stars alongside Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders, Bodyguard), Timothy West (EastEnders), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley, Bodyguard), and Gemma Jones (Sense and Sensibility, Bridget Jones's Diary).

With various episodes directed by Wainwright, Sarah Harding (Vikings), and Jennifer Perrott (Doctor Who), the series will chronicle the years Anne Lister (Jones) became widely recognized in her town as "Gentleman Jack," a somewhat derogatory nickname due to her being a gutsy businesswoman and a fierce landlord who was known for openly having lesbian love affairs.

"Gentleman Jack" is premiering on HBO Monday, April 22nd. It's also set to air on BBC One in the U.K.

Set in 1832 West Yorkshire, England, GENTLEMAN JACK is inspired by the true-story and coded journals of Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones), and follows her attempt to revitalize her inherited home, Shibdhen Hall. Most notably for the time period, a part of Lister's plan is to help the fate of her own family by taking a wife.
