It's the story of the legendary author who wrote "The Lord of the Rings" novels, and the story of the friends and loved ones who inspired him to create iconic characters like Frodo and Gandalf.

Check out the official full-length trailer for "Tolkien," the upcoming biopic that stars Nicholas Hoult (aka Beast from the "X-Men" films) as a young J. R. R. Tolkien, the renowned English novelist who is widely celebrated for writing the seminal best-selling fantasy epics "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" novels.

Lily Collins (Okja, The Mortal Instruments) also stars in the period film as Edith Bratt, Tolkien's childhood crush. She would eventually marry Tolkien and become his lifelong muse.

Dramatizing Tolkien's formative school days, his beloved friendships with schoolmates, his traumatic experiences serving as an infantry soldier in World War I, and also his courtship with Edith, the film is directed by award-winning Finnish director Dome Karukoski, whose film credits include "Tom of Finland," "Lapland Odyssey" and "Heart of a Lion."

Written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford (Pride), and co-starring Colm Meaney and Derek Jacobi, "Tolkien" is coming to U.S. theaters May 10th.

TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the "fellowship" apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
