Here's an early peek at the upcoming small-screen adaptation of Philip Pullman's best-selling fantasy-adventure novel series "His Dark Materials," which stars "Logan" breakout Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, a young orphan girl living in a parallel universe who sets off on a magical journey to the far North to rescue her best friend and other kidnapped children.

The BBC One/HBO series -- in which Oscar-and-Emmy-winning director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech, John Adams) is helming the first two episodes -- also features James McAvoy as aristocratic adventurer Lord Asriel; Ruth Wilson as mysterious power-seeker Marisa Coulter, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as American aeronaut Lee Scoresby.

The cast also includes Clarke Peters, Lewin Lloyd, Ruta Gedmintas, Lucian Msamati, Anne-Marie Duff, James Cosmo, and Will Keen (Dafne's father).

Adapted for the screen by BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne (National Treasure, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), the TV series has already been greenlit for a second season.

Presumably, the first season will be based on "Northern Lights," the first installment in Pullman's book trilogy, which was also the same source material for the 2007 Nicole Kidman-Daniel Craig film "The Golden Compass."

Season Two will likely depict Pullman's "The Subtle Knife," with a possible third season to draw from Pullman's "The Amber Spyglass."

As of yet, there's no official air date for Season One of "His Dark Materials." But it's expected to premiere sometime later in the year in the UK on BBC One and in the US on HBO.

synopsis:
Dafne Keen takes on the lead role of Lyra, the young protagonist of the story who lives in Jordan College, Oxford. Placed there at the request of her Uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) she lives a sheltered life amongst the scholars and college staff while under the watchful protection of The Master (Clarke Peters) and Librarian Scholar Charles (Ian Gelder).

When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson) enters Lyra's life she embarks upon a dangerous journey of discovery from Oxford to London. Here she meets Father MacPhail (Will Keen), Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) and journalist Adele Starminster (Georgina Campbell) at a glittering society party where she first hears about the sinister General Oblation Board.

Lyra is subsequently thrown into the nomadic world of the boat dwelling Gyptians - Ma Costa (Anne-Marie Duff), Farder Coram (James Cosmo), John Faa (Lucian Msamati), Raymond Van Geritt (Mat Fraser), Jack Verhoeven (Geoff Bell) and Benjamin de Ruyter (Simon Manyonda) who take her North in her quest.

Once in the North she meets charismatic aeronaut and adventurer Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) who joins them on their epic journey and who becomes one of Lyra's closest allies.
