Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne star in this semi-biographical 1980s-set British drama from acclaimed indie auteur Joanna Hogg (Unrelated, Exhibition, Archipelago).
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize under the World Cinema category at this year's Sundance Film Festival, "The Souvenir" is inspired by the early life of filmmaker Joanna Hogg.
Newcomer Honor Swinton Byrne (I Am Love ) plays Julie, a socially timid yet overly earnest film student who finds herself stuck in a toxic romantic relationship with a pseudo-intellectual freeloader (played by Tom Burke, from the U.K. series "War & Peace" and "The Musketeers").
Julie's upper-class mother is played by Tilda Swinton, who is Honor Swinton Byrne's real-life mother. Side note: Honor previously made her acting debut on her mother's 2009 Italian drama "I Am Love."
After premiering to solid reviews last month at Sundance, "The Souvenir," which BTW is executive produced by Martin Scorsese, will be released in U.S. theaters on May 17th, through A24 Films.
The film is supposedly the first entry in a semi-biographical two-parter from filmmaker Hogg. The sequel is expected to start shooting this summer, and will also be distributed by A24. In the meantime, you can watch the newly-released official trailer, above.
