Paramount Network has released the official trailer for "I Am Richard Pryor," a new documentary exploring the legacy of the late, great comedian who had a big hand in shaping a generation of self-deprecating, self-examining stand-up comics.

Fiercely honest and always hilarious, Pryor began his comedy career as an ordinary joke-teller during the 1960s but rocketed to fame in the early '70s as a frank-talking counterculture comedian with a razor-sharp wit and a profoundly painful past. Pryor also had a notorious drug habit throughout the '70s and '80s, which not only affected his personal life but also partly became the focus of his stand-up material.

"It so moves an audience to find a performer who shares their vulnerability with you," comedian Lily Tomlin says in the trailer about Pryor's unique style of honesty. "They're laughing," Sandra Bernhard adds. "But also suddenly, you're a raw nerve."

Written and directed by documentarian Jesse James Miller (Chasing Evel: The Robbie Knievel Story, The Good Son: The Life of Ray Boom Boom Mancini), the feature doc is the latest installment in Paramount Network's ongoing "I Am" documentary series, which has previously profiled deceased celebrities that include Bruce Lee, Chris Farley, Heath Ledger, Paul Walker, and MLK Jr.

Executive produced by Paul Gertz, Kent Wingerak, Jaimee Kosanke, and Jennifer Pryor, "I Am Richard Pryor" is set to make its world premiere next week at the SXSW Film Festival, shortly before debuting on the Paramount Network on Friday, March 15th.

Trailblazer, comic, icon. Richard Pryor always spoke his truth and opened the doors for countless comics and performers who came after him.
