Yara Shahidi (star of "Black-ish" and "Grown-ish") plays a young immigrant woman who happens to meet and fall in love with a handsome Korean-American stranger (played by Riverdale's Charles Melton) on the day before she is to be deported back to her native country of Jamaica in this New York-set romantic drama "The Sun Is Also a Star."

The upcoming film, for which an official trailer has been released online today, takes place over the course of a single day in New York City during which Natasha (Shahidi), an unsentimental realist, finds herself falling for a sweet-talking charmer named Daniel (Melton), despite knowing that she has less than 24 hours before her family are forced to leave America.

Based on the best-selling romance novel of the same name by "Everything, Everything" author Nicola Yoon, the film is directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker Ry Russo-Young (Before I Fall, Nobody Walks) and written by "Girls Trip" scribe Tracy Oliver.

"The Sun Is Also a Star" is hitting theaters May 17th. Watch the trailer, above.

"What if I told you I could get you to fall in love with me…?"

College-bound romantic Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi) meet -- and fall for each other -- over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City. Sparks immediately fly between these two strangers, who might never have met had fate not given them a little push. But will fate be enough to take these teens from star-crossed to lucky in love? With just hours left on the clock in what looks to be her last day in the U.S., Natasha is fighting against her family's deportation as fiercely as she's fighting her budding feelings for Daniel, who is working just as hard to convince her they are destined to be together.

A modern-day story about finding love against all odds, THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR explores whether our lives are determined by fate or the random events of the universe. Based on the acclaimed bestseller by "Everything, Everything" author Nicola Yoon.
