While reuniting with "Nightcrawler" writer-director Dan Gilroy, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a fancy-pants art critic who discovers a collection of demonic paintings in the first official trailer for "Velvet Buzzsaw."

The Netflix original thriller, which also stars Rene Russo, Toni Collette, and John Malkovich, takes a dark satirical jab at the contemporary art scene in Los Angeles as it tells the mind-bending story of an art snob named Morf Vandewalt (Gyllenhaal) whose life is turned upside down when he stumbles on a strange collection of art paintings that came from a recently deceased, undiscovered artist, who apparently used blood for paint.

But when these paintings turn out to be evil, killing whoever looks long enough into its blood-etched canvases, it sends shockwaves throughout the art world -- yet the paintings become a major hit, and likely more valuable.

Co-starring Zawe Ashton (Nocturnal Animals), Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Billy Magnussen (Game Night), "Velvet Buzzsaw" is hitting select theaters February 1st. It will also be released on Netflix on that same date.
