Fox's Batman-prequel series "Gotham" returns in a couple of weeks with its fifth and final season, and the network has just released an official trailer, giving fans a look at all of the super-villains that have emerged within the city, just as things are about to go off the rails.

"We are surrounded by hostile forces," says a young detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), who's been the main focus of the DC-based crime series, which has been chronicling Gordon's early career as a newly minted Gotham cop, prior to becoming the city's most famous police commissioner. "I'm just trying to keep this city from falling apart," he adds.

The new season, which is labeled "Legend of the Dark Knight," will also follow a teenage Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) as he transitions from bitter billionaire heir to fierce vigilante, and possibly the savior of Gotham. In fact, it appears a lot of characters in this new season are about to creep closer to their known comic book personas, for example a teenage Selina Kyle will be on the brink of becoming Catwoman (again played by Camren Bicondova).

Executive produced and written by Bruno Heller and executive produced by Danny Cannon and John Stephens, "Gotham: Legend of the Dark Knight" will also see the return of Joker-like villain Jerome aka Jeremiah Valeska (again played by Cameron Monaghan), Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Edward Nygma aka The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Ra's al Ghul (Alexander Siddig), Professor Hugo Strange (BD Wong), and Barbara Kean (Erin Richards). Additionally, joining this new final season is Eduardo Dorrance aka Bane (played here by Shane West).

"Gotham: Season 5" premieres January 3rd on FOX.
