Steve Young is a former late-night comedy writer who has worked over two decades for Late Show host Dave Letterman. While working on a segment for Letterman, he randomly walked into a local vintage record store and stumbled onto something that would instantly become his new obsession. Young found a couple of rare record albums. They were bizarre recordings of obscure Broadway-style musicals from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s that were produced by some of the top corporations in America, made solely for their sales team.

Relics of a bygone era, these kitsch souvenir albums were a small window into the rarely-seen world of the industrial musicals, corporate-made song-and-dance stage shows that were exclusively performed during business conventions and sales meetings. These musicals usually ranged from the bizarre to the ridiculous, but a few were well-made by top-notch Broadway artists who would later have very successful careers (among them include Martin Short, Florence Henderson, Chita Rivera, Susan Stroman, etc.).

Inspired by Young's best-selling coffee table book "Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals" and directed by former "Late Show with David Letterman" editor Dava Whisenant, "Bathtubs Over Broadway" premiered to glowing reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it took home the "Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award."

"Bathtubs Over Broadway" is currently playing in select theaters, with more cities to come in January.

synopsis:
When he started as a comedy writer for the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show, Steve stumbled onto a few vintage record albums that would change his life forever.

Bizarre cast recordings -- marked "internal use only" -- revealed full-throated Broadway-style musical shows about some of the most recognizable corporations in America: General Electric, McDonald's, Ford, DuPont, Xerox. Steve didn't know much about musical theater, but these recordings delighted him in a way that nothing ever had.

BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY follows Steve Young on his quest to find all he can about this hidden world. While tracking down rare albums, unseen footage, composers and performers, Steve forms unlikely friendships and discovers that this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway.
