Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book) dons aging makeup and white hair as he plays an ex-detective who is recounting an old missing-person case that has haunted him for several decades in the new Season 3 trailer for HBO's critically acclaimed anthology crime thriller "True Detective."

We see Mahershala Ali's aging character, Mr. Hays, sitting on a chair in front of a female reporter in the new preview. While a camera is rolling, she asks him, "Have you sat back over the last two decades and thought about the sheer number of fatalities surrounding this case? What happened?"

The clip flashes back in time. Mr. Hays is much younger now -- a detective in Arkansas who has just started to investigate the mysterious disappearances of two local kids. He fears the case might be his last. A haunting prediction that appears to have come true.

The new eight-episode season of the Nic Pizzolatto-created series also stars Stephen Dorff (Blade) as Hays' partner, Det. Roland West, and Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts, Selma) as Hays' girlfriend, Amelia, a local school teacher who is also writing a true-crime novel based on the same missing-person case.

The cast also includes Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire), Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife), and Josh Hopkins (Quantico).

With the first two episodes directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark), "True Detective: Season 3" is due to premiere Sunday, January 13, 2019 on HBO.
