David Oyelowo (Selma, The Butler) and Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) take on the iconic roles of unforgiving police inspector Javert and prisoner-turned-altruistic businessman Jean Valjean, respectively, in the first official trailer for the forthcoming six-part television drama based on Victor Hugo's classic French Revolution-set novel "Les Miserables."

Also starring Lily Collins (Okja, The Mortal Instruments) as Fantine and Ellie Bamber (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as Cosette with Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick) as The Thenardiers, the BBC and PBS mini-series is a faithful, yet non-musical adaptation of Hugo's beloved 1862 French historical epic about how a lowly French convict becomes a successful businessman, respectable city manager, and the virtuous benefactor of a young orphaned Parisian woman, all while being pursued by a merciless and obsessed police inspector.

Directed by Emmy-nominated TV helmer Tom Shankland (The Missing, Ripper Street) and adapted by Emmy-winning writer Andrew Davies (UK's House of Cards, Mr Selfridge, War & Peace), the TV drama is coming soon, to be released on Masterpiece PBS in the U.S. and on BBC One in the U.K.

MASTERPIECE on PBS and BBC One announce a new adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel LES MISERABLES from multi award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies. The six-part drama adaptation stars Dominic West as Jean Valjean, and David Oyelowo as Javert in this landmark drama adaptation. They are joined in this epic event drama by Lily Collins in the role of Fantine.

With a striking intensity and relevance to us today, Victor Hugo's novel is testimony to the struggles of France's underclass and how far they must go to survive. The six-part television adaptation of the renowned book will vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessible story that was Hugo's lifework.
