Steve Carell struggles to recover from a near-fatal beating in the new trailer for "Welcome to Marwen," a fantasy-tinged fact-based drama from Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future).

Inspired by 2010's SXSW-winning documentary "Marwencol" by filmmaker Jeff Malmberg, the film tells the incredible true story of Mark Hogancamp (portrayed here by Carell), a photographer and model builder who, after being brutally attacked outside of a bar by a group of neo-Nazi thugs, finds himself suffering severe brain damage and a near-complete loss of memory.

While he recovers from his physical injuries, Mark has found a unique form of therapy to deal with his trauma -- he builds and paints miniature WWII-style figurines. He also constructs an entire miniature town called "Marwen" and takes photos of his toy soldiers in different types of war scenarios.

Combining live-action with computer-generated WWII toy soldiers that resemble Carell and other actors in the cast, "Welcome to Marwen" is being touted as "the most original film of the year."

Written by Zemeckis from a story co-written by him and Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride), and featuring a strong female supporting cast that includes Leslie Mann (Blockers), Merritt Wever (Godless), Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), "Welcome to Marwen" is coming to theaters on December 21st.

This holiday season, Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis -- the groundbreaking filmmaker behind Forrest Gump, Flight and Cast Away -- directs Steve Carell in the most original movie of the year.

"Welcome to Marwen" tells the miraculous true story of one broken man's fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation -- a testament to the most powerful women he knows -- through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, "Welcome to Marwen" shows that when your only weapon is your imagination ... you'll find courage in the most unexpected place.
