Check out the official trailer for "Star Trek: Short Treks - The Brightest Star," which is one of four stand-alone "Star Trek" shorts that will be released exclusively on CBS All-Access streaming service.

"The Brightest Star" is giving viewers a look at the origins of USS Discovery first officer Saru (Doug Jones) as it delves into the history of his alien race, the Kelpiens.

"When my people look up at the stars, they see only death," says Saru in the new preview, who, as a Kelpien, has the ability to sense the coming of death. He adds "What is out there, beyond the skies?"

Directed by TV helmer Douglas Aarniokoski (Star Trek: Discovery, Sleepy Hollow), "The Brightest Star" is the third installment of a four-part anthology series, following the ten-minute-long "Star Trek" shorts "Calypso" and "Runaway," which features Mary Wiseman as starfleet cadet Sylvia Tilly in her own stand-alone story.

"The Brightest Star" is due to start streaming on December 6th on CBS All-Access. Meanwhile, the second season of "Star Trek: Discovery," which will feature a young and bearded Spock (played by Ethan Peck) and a new incarnation of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), is premiering January 17th.

synopsis:
Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.
