Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly may have just entered this year's award season race as they transform themselves into the legendary Hollywood comedy duo 'Laurel and Hardy' in the upcoming biopic "Stan & Ollie," for which an official U.S. trailer has just been released.

The film, which is written by Oscar-nominated "Philomena" screenwriter Jeff Pope and directed by "Filth" helmer Jon S. Baird, chronicles the long-term, yet sometimes bitter relationship between world-renowned slapstick comedians Stan Laurel (Coogan) and Oliver "Ollie" Hardy (Reilly), better known together as 'Laurel and Hardy.'

Co-starring Shirley Henderson (Bridget Jones) and Nina Arianda (Florence Foster Jenkins) as Laurel and Hardy's respective wives, Lucille and Ida, the period drama tells the untold story of what would become Laurel and Hardy's farewell European comedy tour in 1953, during which the duo's popularity was in deep decline. It was a physically-demanding tour that had them traveling through parts of England and Ireland, as Hardy struggled with serious health problems concerning his heart and weight.

"Stan & Ollie" is scheduled to open theatrically in New York and Los Angeles beginning Friday, December 28th with other cities to follow.

synopsis:
LAUREL AND HARDY, one of the world's great comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they re-connect with their adoring fans.

The tour becomes a hit, but Stan and Ollie can't quite shake the specter of Laurel and Hardy's past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver's failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.
