Netflix has released the official trailer for the forthcoming German murder-mystery series "Perfume," which follows a police investigation into the strange and brutal murder of a woman whose scent glands were methodically extracted from her body, possibly by someone she went to boarding school with, as each of her five old schoolmates find themselves being interrogated by detectives.

The six-episode thriller, which hails from acclaimed German TV director Philipp Kadelbach (SS-GB, Generation War), is a contemporary spin on German writer Patrick Suskind's best-selling historical horror novel "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer," about a 18th-century French serial killer who embarks on a homicidal mission to create the perfect fragrance.

The book, itself, was already made into a 2006 English-language feature film. Though this Netflix adaptation appears to be loosely inspired by the source material, as it takes bold creative liberties and sets the story in modern day Germany.

Starring Friederike Becht (The Reader), August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds), Wotan Wilke Mohring (Valkyrie), and Susanne Wuest (Goodnight Mommy), "Perfume" will be released on Netflix beginning December 21st.

synopsis:
Patrick Suskind's best-selling novel about smell, passion and serial killing gets a shocking contemporary spin. While in boarding school, a group of six become friends through their intense passion for scent. When one is brutally murdered years later, disturbing secrets about the group are revealed when the police investigates each as a suspect.
