Oscar-winner Natalie Portman taps into her inner Lady Gaga as she plays a world-famous pop star whose career and life are marred by tragedies in the first official trailer for "Vox Lux."

The drama chronicles the traumatic life and musical career of a fictional pop singer named Celeste, played both by Portman and 16-year-old British actress Raffey Cassidy, from "Tomorrowland" and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer."

Divided into three different stages of the singer's complicated life, the film opens in 1999, when Celeste (played by Cassidy) is a young aspiring singer and songwriter who survives a horrific high school shooting. That tragic event thrusts her into the national spotlight where she gets her first taste of fame.

The film, which features original songs by SIA, eventually jumps to 2017, where Celeste is now a famous superstar diva (played by Portman) who is dealing with serious personal issues. She is also the mother of a rebellious teenage girl, named Albertine, who, interestingly enough, is also played by Raffey Cassidy.

The cast also includes Jude Law as Celeste's longtime manager, while other cast members include Christopher Abbott and Stacy Martin with Willem Dafoe serving as the film's narrator.

"Vox Lux" is written and directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Brady Corbet; it's a follow-up to his Venice-winning directorial debut, the 2015 period thriller "The Childhood of a Leader."

After premiering to mostly positive reviews at this year's Venice Film Festival, "Vox Lux" is hitting select theaters on December 7th. Watch the trailer, above.

VOX LUX begins in 1999 when teenage sisters Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) and Eleanor (Stacy Martin) survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of catastrophe -- while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, the now 31-year-old Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mother to a teenage daughter of her own and struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.
