Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman plays an LAPD detective who is haunted by her dark past in the first official trailer for "Destroyer."

In the vein of "True Detective," this cop mystery-thriller offers Kidman a chance to lose herself both in appearance and spirit as she gives what looks like a powerful, transformative performance as Erin Bell, a veteran police detective who suddenly finds herself confronting her past -- a past that has tormented her for decades. It involves around a dark period in her early career when she went undercover as a member of a deadly bank-robbing gang. And those events had psychologically scarred her.

"I'm mad, I'm still mad," says Kidman, while wearing prosthetic makeup which makes her face look exhausted and depleted. "It's burned a circuit in my brain," she adds.

The film comes from director Karyn Kusama and screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the team behind the critically acclaimed horror thriller "The Invitation."

While featuring a strong supporting cast that includes Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany, Sebastian Stan, Scoot McNairy, and Bradley Whitford, "Destroyer," which premiered to mostly positive reviews last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, will have a limited theatrical run in late December, expanding into more theaters throughout January.
