It's a Cold War-like thriller with a science fiction twist.

J.K. Simmons (The Front Runner, Whiplash) is back, once again playing in dual roles as undercover OI agent Howard Silk, and his alternate-universe doppelganger, in the official trailer for Season 2 of Starz's hit espionage thriller "Counterpart."

Created by Justin Marks (screenwriter of Disney's "The Jungle Book" and "Top Gun: Maverick"), the high-concept series is set in an alternate world where the government has been secretly safeguarding a bridge to a parallel dimension for the last 30 years.

Simmons plays Howard Silk, a low-ranking bureaucratic agent who, while in the first season, learns the world had inexplicably split up into two parallel dimensions due to a secret scientific government project that went awry in 1987. Simmons also learns that, because of this event, he has an identical counterpart living in an alternate world, who is also named Howard Silk and who is also a bureaucratic officer, but with higher clearance and has much more experience working as a well-respected undercover agent. They are two identical people with the same upbringing but took two vastly different paths since the event.

Season 1 had both Howards working together as they agreed to swap lives in order to stop a mysterious dimension-hopping assassin. Now it seems the Howards are working against each other as Season 2 has them stuck in each other's worlds. But because their worlds are laced with conspiracy and espionage, how do you trust anyone ... especially when anyone can be an identical secret agent for the other team?

Co-starring Olivia Williams and Harry Lloyd with Get Out's Betty Gabriel and Emmy winner James Cromwell as new cast members, "Counterpart: Season 2" is set to premiere Sunday, December 9th on STARZ.
