Behold the first official trailer for "Dark Phoenix," the much-anticipated "X-Men" sequel, which is inspired by the beloved Jean Grey-centric comic-book story arc, known in the comics as The Dark Phoenix Saga.

"Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner is once again taking on the role of the iconic red-headed mutant superhero with telekinetic and telepathic powers in the forthcoming Fox-Marvel film, which primarily focuses on Turner's Jean Grey as she gradually transforms into her super-villain persona, the Dark Phoenix. Her transition begins after she survives a near-death experience during a rescue mission in space. And the fact that Jean is becoming more powerful and ultimately out of control leaves her fellow X-Men teammates in a very precarious position.

Marking the directorial debut of screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse), the film introduces Jessica Chastain for the first time to the "X-Men" cinematic universe. She plays a mysterious shape-shifting villain who manipulates the young Jean Grey and helps her transition into her villainous alter-ego.

Meanwhile, returning X-Men cast members include Jennifer Lawrence (as Mystique), James McAvoy (as Professor Xavier), Michael Fassbender (as Magneto), Tye Sheridan (as Cyclops), Nicholas Hoult (as Beast), Evan Peters (as Quicksilver), Alexandra Shipp (as Storm), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (as Nightcrawler).

Though the movie was originally scheduled to be released this fall, the studio had ordered reshoots earlier this year, which pushed the film's release date back to early 2019.

"Dark Phoenix" is now set to open in theaters on June 7, 2019.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
