A brand-new "First Man" trailer has been released, offering another intense look at what will likely be an awards season contender, which is already being touted by critics as one of the best films of the year since premiering a week ago at Venice and TIFF.

The 1960s-era historical film, which reunites Ryan Gosling with his Oscar-winning "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle, tells the harrowing story of how Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong (portrayed by Gosling) became the "First Man" to walk on the Moon. And judging by the preview, it was a long, arduous journey that included several technical mishaps, failed launch tests, tragic deaths and funerals.

"Do you think you're coming back," asks Armstrong's young son in the new trailer. To which Armstrong replies, "We have every intention of coming back." His son quickly retorts, "But you don't know."

Based on Armstrong's official biography by James R. Hansen, the film -- which also features Golden Globe-winning "The Crown" actress Claire Foy as Armstrong's wife, Janet -- seemingly depicts the NASA legend, who was famously humble, and often shied away from the press, as a stoic hero who was determined to complete his mission, even though that mission could have cost him his life -- and at times, it looked like it would.

Co-starring Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Jason Clarke, Ciaran Hinds, and Pablo Schreiber, and written by Oscar-winning "Spotlight" scribe Josh Singer, "First Man" opens worldwide on October 12th.

synopsis:
On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures' First Man, the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost -- on Armstrong and on the nation -- of one of the most dangerous missions in history.
