HBO has released the first official teaser trailer for Season 3 of the critically acclaimed anthology crime drama "True Detective," which, this time around, stars Academy Award Winner Mahershala Ali as the lead detective.

The eight-episode mystery thriller, created and written by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, also stars Stephen Dorff (Somewhere, Blade) and Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts, Selma) with supporting turns from Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) and Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire).

Spanning over the course of three decades, Season 3 will tell the story of two detectives from Arkansas (played by Ali and Dorff ) as they become deeply traumatize by a case involving the mysterious disappearances of two young girls.

Film director Jeremy Saulnier, of "Blue Ruin" and "Green Room" fame, helms the first two episodes of Season 3.

Emmy-nominated TV helmer Daniel Sackheim (Ozark) and Nic Pizzolatto will direct, separately, the rest of the remaining episodes. Pizzolatto will be making his directorial debut.

"True Detective: Season 3" premieres sometime in January 2019 on HBO.

Partner detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas. The story spans three decades.

Oscar winner Mahershala Ali stars as detective Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. Stephen Dorff also stars as Arkansas State Investigator Roland West, while Carmen Ejogo plays school teacher Amelia Reardon, who is connected to the two missing children.
