Though he earned an Oscar for directing the 1981 Oscar-winning drama "Ordinary People" and was rewarded with an Honorary Oscar in 2002, Robert Redford, 82, has never once won the Golden statuette for acting. Well, this year will be Redford's final chance to bag himself a Best Actor Award as he has recently announced his retirement from acting.

"The Old Man & The Gun," a 1970s-era bank robber drama from prolific writer-director David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Pete's Dragon, Ain't Them Bodies Saints), is going to be the very last time we see Redford in front of the camera. And judging by a brand new trailer (watch it above), Redford will likely generate some major awards buzz by the end of the year. Hell, the sympathy vote alone might guarantee him an Oscar nom, if not a win.

Based on the "mostly" true story of Forrest Tucker, a career bank robber who spent most of his life in and out of jail, but was better known for successfully escaping prison 16 times, the film sees Redford as an aging, charismatic Tucker, who is embarking on a bank heist with two of his old criminal partners (played here by Danny Glover and musician/actor Tom Waits).

Adapted from the New Yorker article by David Grann, the film also stars Casey Affleck (in his third collaboration with Lowery) as a police detective on Redford's trail. Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek and Tika Sumpter also star.

"The Old Man & The Gun" is scheduled to make its world premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will also open in theaters on September 28th.

THE OLD MAN & THE GUN is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest's commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.
