Sir Anthony Hopkins descends into madness as he plays an aging dictator corrupted by power in the newly-released U.S. trailer for Amazon's adaptation of William Shakespeare's famed tragedy "King Lear."

Featuring a stellar supporting cast that includes the likes of Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, and Florence Pugh (as King Lear's daughters) with Jim Broadbent, Tobias Menzies, Andrew Scott, Jim Carter, Christopher Eccleston, and John Macmillan, the British TV movie, set in a fictional present, sees Hopkins in the title role as a mentally unstable 80-year-old despot who is in the process of dividing up his kingdom for his three daughters until one of them is suddenly disinherited and banished from England.

The film was adapted and directed by acclaimed theatre and film director Richard Eyre (Iris, Notes on a Scandal), who previously worked with Hopkins on last year's Golden Globe-nominated BBC movie "The Dresser" and also just directed Emma Thompson on the upcoming British judge drama "The Children Act."

"King Lear" has already been released in the U.K., but will make its U.S. debut next month. It's due to stream on Amazon Prime beginning September 28th.

Set in the fictional present and starring Anthony Hopkins, the 80 year-old King Lear divides his kingdom among his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, according to their affection for him. When his youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to flatter him, hurt and angry Lear banishes her. With that fateful decision, family and state collapse into chaos and warfare.
