A young, rebellious girl befriends a one of a kind robot (voiced by John Krasinski) in the official trailer for Netflix's upcoming animated sci-fi film "Next Gen."

Featuring impressive-looking animation designs and digital visual effects that is on par with any major animated studio production, "Next Gen" takes place in a future world where society has become obsessed with acquiring the latest, most advanced robots.

Comic actress Charlyne Yi (TV's House, Knocked Up) lends her voice to Mai, a young teenage misfit who, while attending a promotional public event for the next big robot, accidentally stumbles into a secret robotic lab where she meets a highly advanced robot prototype, called 7-7-2-3 (voiced by Krasinski). After their initial encounter, they soon become close friends. Mai even goes so far to hide 7-7-2-3 in her house.

But when the city comes under attack by an army of evil bots, it's up to Mai and her new robot friend to put an end to the "injustice."

The voice cast also includes Jason Sudeikis, Michael Pena, David Cross, and Constance Wu.

Co-written and co-directed by animator/layout artist Kevin R. Adams and visual effects animator Joe Ksander (they're the filmmaking team behind the 2014 short film "Gear"; they also both worked together on Shane Acker's animated sci-fi movie "9"), "Next Gen" was reportedly acquired by Netflix at this year's Cannes Film Festival for $30 million -- it's a distribution deal that includes the worldwide rights, though excluding China.

"Next Gen" is due to premiere September 7th on Netflix.
