Annapurna Pictures has released the first official teaser trailer for "If Beale Street Could Talk," which is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins' much-anticipated follow-up to "Moonlight."

The upcoming film is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by the late, author and celebrated social critic James Baldwin (Note: this trailer has been released on what would've been Baldwin's 94th birthday), and it tells the tragic love story of an African-American couple living in 1970s Harlem, New York.

Newcomer Kiki Layne stars as a 19-year-old Harlem girl named "Tish" who falls in love with a 22-year-old local sculptor named "Fonny" (played by Stephan James, star of the Jesse Owens biopic "Race"). Their love is severely tested when Fonny is falsely accused of rape and sent to prison. After learning she is pregnant with Fonny's child, Tish fights to get him out of prison, while relying on the support of her hard-working mother (played by Emmy-winner Regina King).

The film's cast also includes the likes of Brian Tyree Henry, Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, and Michael Beach, with Emily Rios, Pedro Pascal, Dave Franco, Diego Luna, and Ed Skrein.

Currently slated to make its world premiere next month at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, "If Beale Street Could Talk" will be released in theaters on December 14th.
