It's been in the works for over 15 years. But James Cameron, now working hard on his "Avatar" sequels, didn't have enough time to see it come to fruition. So, Cameron offered "Sin City" director Robert Rodriguez the chance to take a crack at his long-gestating film project. To Cameron's surprise and delight, Rodriguez was able to narrow things down into a workable shooting script, drawing from a pile of notes from Cameron, which included a dense 186-page screenplay and a large collection of concept artwork.

The result of Cameron and Rodriguez's hard work is the highly-ambitious science-fiction action movie "Alita: Battle Angel," for which a brand-new trailer has just been released, today.

The film is based on a popular Manga series "Gunnm (aka Battle Angel Alita)" by Japanese artist Yukito Kishiro, and it stars Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner, Insurgent) in the title role of Alita, which is performed in motion capture.

Alita is a wide-eyed cybernetic girl who, after being salvaged from a metal scrapyard, finds out that she has no idea who she is. She soon goes on a dangerous quest in search of her identity -- only to discover that she possesses incredible fighting skills, which she quickly puts to good use.

Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) plays Alita's human caretaker and father figure, a cyborg specialist named Dr. Dyson Ido.

The rest of the cast includes fellow Oscar-winners Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) along with Keean Johnson (TV's Nashville) as Alita's potential love interest and Deadpool's Ed Skrein as a lethal cyborg villain.

Directed by Rodriguez and produced by Cameron and his long-time producing partner Jon Landau, "Alita: Battle Angel" is coming to theaters February 14, 2019.

Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.
