English actress Jodie Whittaker, who recently starred in the British crime series "Broadchurch" and co-starred in the cult alien-invasion film "Attack the Block," helps usher in a new "Doctor Who" era as she becomes the first woman to take over the role of the Doctor, following Peter Capaldi's exit last season.

Whittaker plays the 13th incarnation of the beloved Time Lord in the forthcoming new season of the long-running British sci-fi series, which follows the time-bending adventures of an inter-dimensional space traveler who possesses the ability to regenerate him ... or herself.

Season 11 of "Doctor Who" will also introduce three new "companions" or rather, "friends" played by Bradley Walsh (Coronation Street), Mandip Gill (Hollyoaks), and Tosin Cole (Burning Sands).

British TV producer-writer Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch, Torchwood) is also taking over the job of showrunner from long-time "Doctor Who" producer Steven Moffat, who decided to leave the show last season.

Set to premiere later in the fall, "Doctor Who: Season 11" has received an official trailer, which was just shown today at San Diego Comic Con. Watch it above.

synopsis:
The Doctor is an alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through all of time and space in his TARDIS with his companion. Instead of dying, the Doctor is able to "regenerate" into a new body, taking on a new personality with each regeneration.
