History Channel has released the first-look trailer for their forthcoming UFO mystery series "Project Blue Book," which stars Aidan Gillen (aka 'Littlefinger' on HBO's "Game of Thrones") as a 1950s science professor who is recruited by the U.S. government to investigate and debunk reported UFO sightings, only to realize that there are some encounters that can't be explained or be disproved.

Executive produced by filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future Trilogy, Forrest Gump, Contact), the ten-episode drama is based on declassified government files and inspired by a real-life top-secret U.S. Air Force program called "Project Blue Book," in which the U.S. government sent investigators to examine over 12,000 reported sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) between the years 1952 and 1969.

Created by David O'Leary and executive produced by showrunner Sean Jablonski (Nip/Tuck, Suits), "Project Blue Book" also stars Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries), Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers), and Laura Mennell (The Man in the High Castle).

Oscar-winning art director/visual effects artist-turned-filmmaker Robert Stromberg (Maleficent) directs the pilot episode of "Project Blue Book," which will premiere January 8, 2019 on the History Channel.

synopsis:
HISTORY's upcoming new drama series "Project Blue Book" is based on the true, top-secret investigations into Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and related phenomena conducted by the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1969.

Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen), a brilliant yet underappreciated college professor, is recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead a clandestine operation called Project Blue Book. Along with his partner, the debonair Air Force Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey), he is summoned to investigate UFO sightings around the country and use science to discover what really happened. However, when some encounters cannot be explained away and cases remain open, Hynek begins to suspect that he has been duped by the government into a larger conspiracy to cover up the truth. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War and rising Atomic Era, each episode will draw from the actual Project Blue Book case files, blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history.
