Glenn Close plays a "king-maker" in the new international trailer for "The Wife."

Based on the acclaimed best-seller of the same name by Meg Wolitzer, this character-driven drama sees Close as the highly intelligent and dutiful spouse of a celebrated novelist (played by "Game of Thrones" actor Jonathan Pryce), who has just been honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature. But on the eve of the award ceremony, Close's character is suddenly approached by a mysterious biographer (Mr Robot's Christian Slater), who claims to have some dirt on her husband, which could be damaging to the image of their 40-year-plus marriage.

"Please don't paint me as the victim. I am much more interesting than that," Close says in the new preview. To which Slater's character quickly responds, "I know you are." It seems he's hinting at a long-kept secret -- she may have always been the real reason behind her husband's literary success. And as the old saying goes, behind every great man, there is an equally great woman -- and in this case, it looks like she is "sick and tired of being invisible."

Also, co-starring Harry Lloyd (STARZ's Counterpart) and Annie Starke (Albert Nobbs), who play the younger versions of Pryce and Close's characters in flashback scenes, the film is directed by Swedish filmmaker Bjorn Runge (Daybreak, Mouth to Mouth) and written by Emmy-winning writer Jane Anderson (Olive Kitteridge).

"The Wife" opens in select U.S. theaters on August 17th with an international release set for September.

synopsis:
After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man's Wife.

Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later -- a lifetime's shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.
