It's the story of a dysfunctional and struggling blue-collar family, yet told candidly through the eyes of three young rambunctious boys.

Check out the trailer for "We the Animals," the Sundance-winning drama that's based on the best-selling semi-biographical book of the same name by writer Justin Torres.

Acclaimed documentarian Jeremiah Zagar (In a Dream, Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart) makes his first narrative feature with "We the Animals," which stars newcomers Evan Rosado, Isaiah Kristian, and Josiah Gabriel as three inseparable brothers who find themselves leaning on each other when their parents go through a bitter break-up.

Raul Castillo (from HBO's "Looking" and Netflix's "Seven Seconds") and Sheila Vand (star of the cult vampire film "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night") co-star in the film as the boys' bickering parents.

"We the Animals" premiered to glowing reviews at this year's Sundance, where it took home a NEXT Innovator Award.

The film is slated for a limited theatrical release beginning August 17th.

synopsis:
Us three. Us brothers. Us kings, inseparable. Three boys tear through their childhood, in the midst of their young parents’ volatile love that makes and unmakes the family many times over. While Manny and Joel grow into versions of their loving and unpredictable father, Ma seeks to shelter her youngest, Jonah, in the cocoon of home. More sensitive and conscious than his older siblings, Jonah increasingly embraces an imagined world all his own.

With a screenplay by Dan Kitrosser and Jeremiah Zagar based on the celebrated Justin Torres novel, WE THE ANIMALS is a visceral coming-of-age story propelled by layered performances from its astounding cast – including three talented, young first-time actors – and stunning animated sequences which bring Jonah’s torn inner world to life. Drawing from his documentary background, director Jeremiah Zagar creates an immersive portrait of working class family life and brotherhood.
