The USA Network is bringing "The Purge" franchise to television, and the cable company has released its first official trailer.

Check out a 40-second sneak peek at the forthcoming "The Purge: TV series," which will serve as a 10-episode side-sequel to the horror-thriller films.

"The Purge" creator/filmmaker James DeMonaco is writing and executive producing the small-screen version of his hit franchise, which is being supervised by showrunner Thomas Kelly, who previously wrote and executive produced Netflix's 1970s hip-hop series "The Get Down" and BBC America's 1860s Irish cop drama "Copper."

Featuring an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Reed Diamond, William Baldwin, Lee Tergesen, Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Fiona Dourif, Amanda Warren, and Lili Simmons, the show -- like the movies -- is set in a dystopian future America where the U.S. government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period during which all crime, including murder, is legal. The series will follow several unrelated, conflicted characters as they prepare for the purge event.

Emmy-winning producer-director of "The People v. O. J. Simpson" Anthony Hemingway, who recently helmed the USA series "Unsolved: The Murders Of Tupac And The Notorious B.I.G.," is directing the premiere episode of "The Purge: TV series," which is set to air Tuesday, September 4th on USA Network (with the premiere and finale episodes simulcast on SYFY).

synopsis:
Based on the hit movie franchise from Blumhouse productions, THE PURGE revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in a dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. Tying them all together is a mysterious savior who's impeccably equipped for everything the night throws at them. As the clock winds down with their fates hanging in the balance, each character is forced to reckon with their pasts as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.
