Mortal Engines — Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

Go behind the scenes of Peter Jackson's new epic movie "Mortal Engines."

Based on British author Philip Reeve's best-selling steampunk novel series, the post-apocalyptic film stars Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar (from TV's "Da Vinci's Demons") as Hester Shaw, a facially scarred runaway who is dead set on assassinating the man who slaughtered her parents, Thaddeus Valentine (played by Hugo Weaving). The problem is, Valentine controls the entire city of London, which is now a gigantic moving machine that frequently attacks other moving cities, like pirate ships at sea.

"Mortal Engines is set in a world that we have never seen," says Peter Jackson in a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the movie. "Hester [the film's main character played by Hilmar] is on a mission to exact vengeance, and kill the person who murdered her mother."

Hester finds an unlikely ally in Tom Natsworthy (played by Irish actor Robert Sheehan). He's a young Londoner who was recently double-crossed by the diabolical Valentine. The two find themselves traveling on the same path and becoming unlikely allies as they set off to shut down London for good.

Jackson, who co-wrote the adapted screenplay with his "Lord of Rings" and "Hobbit" writing partners Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, is serving as producer on the film, which is marking the directorial debut of Oscar-winning visual-effects and storyboard artist Christian Rivers, who has worked with the Oscar-winning director for over 25 years.

Co-starring Korean indie rocker Jihae as badass steampunk pilot Anna Fang, "Mortal Engines" will be hitting theaters on December 14th.

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) -- who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London -- finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
